THE RHEINGOLD
The Rheingold was a Rhine Rhine Railway that ran 1,067 kilometers (663 miles) between Hook of Holland near Rotterdam and Geneva, Switzerland (Basel before 1965) until 1987. The Rheingold ran along the Rhine River with luxurious special carriages, passing through Arnhem in the Netherlands and Cologne in Germany. It was named after Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold, which romantically depicts the Rhine River. From 1965 until its discontinuation in 1987, the Rheingold operated as a first-class train of the Trans Europe Express (TEE).
