Released in 1967, the 1176 Limiting Amplifier offers incredibly fast attack and release times, a musical Class A output stage, and a wide range of sounds from delicate and transparent compression to driven tones and distortion. The Universal Audio 1176LN Classic Limiting Amplifier faithfully reproduces the original, clear design developed by Bill Putnam Sr., and is a piece of audio history used in recordings by artists like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and Michael Jackson.

Rich Tone, Colorful Compressor
The 1176's main selling point is its ultra-fast attack time, which is as little as 20 μS (.00002 seconds) at its fastest setting. This provides excellent performance for all types of program material. However, engineers quickly realized that passing audio through the 1176's circuit imparted character and vibe. Some engineers even used the 1176 with compression turned off to achieve its unique tonal qualities. The unit's amplifier and transformers add a hot quality to any sound that passes through it.
