Origin/History: Jomon Period to present
The origin of the stone flute dates back to the middle Jomon period, approximately 5,000 years ago.
At that time, stone flutes were revered as sacred instruments that connected people and the divine. It is said that the sound of the Nohkan (a type of transverse flute) used in Noh and Kyogen theater was modeled after the stone flute. Because natural stones become musical instruments, they have been passed down to the present day in a form unchanged from the instruments of that era. However, they are played by only a very small number of musicians and do not seem to be widely popular among the general public.
