406 Men's Nagajuban (Under Kimono)
This is an unlined nagajuban (under-kimono) made of habutae silk.
Habutae is characterized by its low twist yarn and small grain.
(Magnified in photos 5 and 6 with a USB microscope.)
The overall color of the nagajuban is a deep, subdued brown and a yellowish light brown beige.
The pattern on the nagajuban is a shokko pattern, which connects octagons and squares to form a floral design, and a shippo (seven treasures) pattern within diagonally drawn frames, resembling a stone pavement (ichimatsu) pattern with kanoko (fawn spots).
A nagajuban is worn directly under a kimono.
While only the collar is usually visible when wearing a kimono, traditionally, men's kimonos were appreciated for their hidden details, and the nagajuban, along with the gauri (lining of the haori jacket), was a subject of elaborate craftsmanship.
When purchasing a nagajuban, especially if buying second-hand or not having it custom-made with a kimono, it is essential to check the yuki (sleeve length from the center back seam to the cuff, usually measured to the wrist) of the kimono you intend to wear it with, and choose a nagajuban that is at least shorter than the kimono's yuki.
At our shop, we tailor nagajuban yuki to be about 7-8mm shorter than the kimono's yuki, but it can be worn without issue even if it's slightly shorter than that.
This is especially true for casual wear, where such details are less critical.
The length of the nagajuban should also not extend below the kimono, but a slightly shorter length is acceptable as it will be hidden by the kimono anyway, so a perfect fit is not essential.
The lining of the nagajuban is made of pure silk habutae, dyed in a deep shade of thatched roof color with a slightly reddish, muted yellow hue.
The color reference is from the online Traditional Colors of Japan guide.
