Description
From the Edo period to the Meiji era, fundoshi (loincloths) were the standard underwear for Japanese men, with the six-shaku mawashi-style fundoshi, as depicted in ukiyo-e prints, being the most common. In Japan's hot and humid summers, the six-shaku fundoshi served as workwear and also as festival attire for mikoshi (portable shrine) and naked festivals.

Sayings like Kinpantsu ichiban (tighten your fundoshi and go for it) and fundoshi o shimete kakarou (tie your fundoshi and get down to business) originated from the six-shaku fundoshi; it's not the same with the Etchu fundoshi.

The feeling of wearing the mawashi-style six-shaku fundoshi, which people in the Edo period wore daily as a matter of course, is different from the Etchu fundoshi. It's strange how it naturally puts you in a determined mood.

Responding to the requests of enthusiasts, we have now decided to produce and sell the authentic, Wada-ji handmade mawashi-style six-shaku fundoshi. If you were born a Japanese man, we believe it's worth trying at least once.

Product Information

The Wada-ji handmade mawashi-style six-shaku fundoshi Edokko is a single, handmade mawashi-style six-shaku fundoshi made from high-quality white bleached cotton Izumi Hagoromo Zari, guaranteed by the Kansai Fashion Federation. It is a faithful reproduction of the underwear used by Edokko (people of Edo) at the time. We also provide photographic instructions on how to tie the Edo-style rear fundoshi.

● Length 210cm, Width 30cm, with reinforced folded edges all around.

● Unlike the mawashi-style six-shaku fundoshi or the sui-kon (water fundoshi), this has a front flap (maedare), and a width of 30cm is just the right size. In Kabuki, when performers tuck up their kimono or spread their legs, the maedare peeking out from the hem of the kimono was considered a sign of masculine allure.

● Please refer to the photos for instructions on how to tie it. Similar to the Etchu fundoshi, tying it about three sun (approx. 10cm) below the navel and passing over the upper edge of the hip bones will prevent it from loosening and make it look stylish.
