This is a viola from Suzuki Violin Manufacturing, a major domestic string instrument maker.
The Special series was manufactured from the 1950s to the early 1970s. These instruments, aged 50-70 years, are highly popular for their excellent craftsmanship from that era and their rich, aged resonance.
With a major lineup revision around 1972, the Special series was discontinued and is now a rare find.

It is highly regarded for its character and sustain due to the extensive handwork by craftsmen of the past. Its popularity is evident, as it has even been revived as a return gift for hometown tax donations in recent years.

The fingerboard is a flat fingerboard specification, with the underside of the C string flattened.
The large 16-inch size allows you to easily enjoy the powerful sound characteristic of a viola.

This is not a location that would typically crack during normal use, so it is likely that someone accidentally broke it while attempting to remove the back plate for an open repair.
